I want to start off by saying theres a lot of Garbo Hip Hop and we are in a state of emergency. Long time since the hip hop i know and love has been true to form. It use to be art, the art form use to be ours. When i say ours i mean those of us living that urban culture. There is such a gap from where this artform came from to the current state its in today. The major labels have injected money into it and it has grown into a beast. Back in the early 90’s the mass media said hip hop was a fad that would die out. Here we are about 25 years later and hip hop is growing and evolving still with no end in sight. I understand that everything evolves however it seems the direction my first love is going in will make her forget where she came from. For example the Kanye who came with “Through the wire” was raw as fuck. Fast forward to today where he is now living “The life of Pablo” shows how shit changes. It was “Buckshot” of the group Blackmoon who said “2 turntables and a mic”. This is the foundation of our music Our culture were masters at taking other songs, other genres of music and making it something we can dance to. The DJ was the one who started it all. The MC was birthed after. In todays hip hop the DJ is almost non existent. In my opinion the DJ is the most crucial element which would set an MC up to be better than the the next. The term “bars” is thrown around so much. A rapper will get on a track and say something that only people in his region would understand and when other people think its garbo or aint feeling it the rapper would claim to be hated on out of being mad. Rather than doing research on other regions to build skill on how things are being said to drive a point home the rapper tends to believe he is starting a movement. Mind you, this rapper has no intent on doing anything more than facebook, instagram or twitter to market himself. Besides many of these cats arent saying anything that hasnt already been said. The art of freestyle is home to most battle rappers. These rappers who do songs wont or cant freestyle. I watched the XXL freshemen Cipher and was dissapointed. Lil Kodak or whatever his name is stopped flowing his garbo ass freestyle. Lil Verti gave it a shot but he certainly aint cut out form this game. Shit almost made me want to listen only to older music, reggae and R&B. I dont even want to get started on the ones calling themselves rappers but do more singing than a singer. I blame Drake for this. I mean Biz Markie sang on “Just a friend” but Drake is on urban radio stations across the country where he doesnt even spit flows at times, he just sings all the way through the song. Lil Yachty refuses to freestyle during interviews. I respect him for at least knowing hes garbo, Drake will get up there and read a freestyle off his phone…Where they do that at? I have a healthy respect for guys like Vic Mensa who takes this hip hop as an art form and transcends the game. There are still some true MCs out there they are just far and few between. I will be searching America looking for artists who are responsible with the craft. The artists who have something to say to our youth, the artists who do rap about having fun. The gunplay and drug dealing talk is getting a little burnt out. Theres more to life than weed, codeine and cash. What good are material items if you are morally and spiritually bankrupt anyway. Im always on a quest for knowledge and insight so join me again for my next article to see how things progress.
